Gaff rig, Vega, Historical, sailing, Vessel, square rig, volunteer sailing, Baltic trader
The photograph shows Vega when she was new and is dated 1893. Over the years she was modified several times and her sailing rig changed back and forth between gaff cutter and Galleass topsail ketch. In 1905 she was sold to Swedish owners and for tax reasons her papers were changed to make her appear Swedish built.

Vega eventually became the last of the working limestone carriers, eking out her living in the small fjords and inlets of Scandinavia until her last paying cargo in1992. In 1994-6 she was extensively restored in Denmark, given a new engine, and complete new drive train. Her sailing rig was restored very much as it might have been the day she was launched. Her cut down mast was replaced with one from another Baltic Trader reputedly built in 1876.

A search of the records in the Norwegian navel museum, Oslo, turned up original drawings taken from a sister ship to VEGA. Using these plans it is hoped to solve the mysteries of her original sailing rig. She is believed to have been a Norwegian topsail ketch very popular with small trading vessels of her time and type.

As well as these valuable drawings, photographs were found of the Nerhus boat yard where she was built and of Mr. Johann Nerhus one of her builders. Another image may contain both Nerhus father and son.
